Q: Why was DICE created?
A: Many recent government studies have identified several issues needing to be address if the United States is to continue its leadership in supercomputing. Intensive data management over geographically dispraised locations has emerged as one of the significant issues impacting the time to solution of complex large datasets problems. The DICE test bed was established as a unique environment for evaluation of potential solutions that will improve the time to solutions of interdisciplinary complex problems.

Q: What is DICE?
A: DICE or Data Intensive Computing Environment, is a multi-government agency, university and private company test bed established using real-world networks to evaluate new and emerging H/W, S/W or combination thereof solutions that will solve or dramatically improve the management of data. The objective isthat these new products will reduce the time required to manage large datasets over geographically dispersed locations. The DICE program goal is to bring data management products to market sooner and with higher validity by enabling unbiased information to readily available prior to making an investment decisions. This will save time and money and advance the use of HPC in solving complex problems. Without the DICE test bed critical data management challenge areas would not be identified and untested and unevaluated solutions will be the only products available in the market place.

Q: What does a DICE node consist of?
A: Each DICE node consists of baseline elements normally seen in HPC centers. There is a HPC Linux Cluster with attached storage and parallel file system, archive system with storage, high speed network switches and routers, access servers, and support servers for logs and management. Each DICE node is currently using virtual tape libraries to simulate long term storage and will be implementing a global WAN cache for a replicated file system for user directories.

Q: You mentioned a Vendors Day, what is it and who can attend?
A: DICE Alliance is an event formerly known as "Vendor's Day." The DICE program plans on holding an annual conference with an objective of providing a forum for input, feedback and discussion of DICE issues and challenges. The perspective of the DICE team is that data intensive computing will be a major area of interest for the HPC community for the foreseeable future. Therefore, one of the goals is to provide an annual forum that will promote discussion on current data management issues between the user communities for the solution providers.
TOP
Q: Are there identified areas or technologies that have special interest?
A: Yes, there are four focus areas, 1) data locality, 2) data movement, 3) data manipulation, and 4) data integrity defined along with the current prioritized list of the12 challenge areas. The challenge areas and the priority will be updated prior to the scheduled Vendors Day in May.
TOP
Q: How do you submit a project?
A: On the DICE website at http://www.avetec.org/dice/agreement.htm there is guidance and directions on how to submit a DICE project.
TOP
Q: When can you submit a product for evaluation?
A: There is an annual call for projects that is made each spring. However the DICE Technical Review Board or TRB that manages the day-to-day operations and evaluates all project proposals evaluated on the test bed will accept unsolicited submittals at anytime.
TOP
Q: Who funds DICE?
A: DICE is a federal grant program with all participating collaborates bring value to the test bed and the products being evaluated. The government has provided funding for the initial test bed setup. However all organizations that have participated in the first three test nodes made an in-kind contribution.
TOP
Q: How many different DICE locations (sites)?
A: The initial test bed has three sites, a NASA site at NASA Goddard in Greenbelt, MD, a DOE site in Springfield, OH in partnership with the Ohio Supercomputer Center, and a DoD site on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH.
TOP
Q: Who is the DICE target audience?
A: The DICE target audience is: 1) nonparticipating government agencies, 2) industry that is nonparticipating and has a product that will improve data management and 3) industry that can make use of the improved data management products.
TOP
Q: Does the government get use of our intellectual property?
A: Short answer: NO! The government is a collaborator just like any organization that participates in the DICE program, intellectual property (IP) belongs to the original owner. The government gets use of the IP only during the project evaluation period. After the evaluation is completed the government retains no rights for use of the IP. One of the major focuses of the DICE team is the protection of IP. No report can be distributed without the agreement of all participating parties in that DICE project.
TOP
Q: What does it mean that “collaborates bring value” to the test bed?
A: The government provided funding to get the program started. However, to participate in the program each collaborative is required to provide an “In-kind” contribution. That contribution can be anything that has a quantifiable value. For example: free, reduced priced or loaned equipment; contributed labor support in the form of technical support, or direct dollar support.
TOP
Q: Who is Avetec? What is their “value” message?
A: Avetec or the Advanced Virtual Engine Test Cell, Inc. is a not-for-profit public benefit research organization. Avetec’s purpose is to facilitate a dramatic reduction in the cost and time it takes to design, develop and test new turbine engines for commercial and military applications. Avetec’s tagline is “Accelerating American Innovation”
TOP
Q: As a vendor, what is in it for me? How do vendors fit in?
A: The long term vision of the three federal agencies that established the DICE test bed is that they will invest only in new products that have demonstrated promised capability in the DICE test bed. As the DICE environment becomes established other federal agencies will be provide evaluation results and are expected to follow the lead of the original of the three that setup the DICE program.
TOP
Q: What would happen if DICE did not exist?
A: The DICE program provides a unique test bed, which was setup under the sponsorship of three federal agencies that are significant users of HPC, to provide a way of evaluating potential solutions for issues and problems facing all uses of HPC system in the areas of intensive data management. These potential solutions could not be adequately tested and if the DICE test bed did not exist. Without DICE the risk of introducing new products would increase.
