DA09 Keynote - Be Careful What You Wish For

Tuesday, May 19, 9-10 a.m.
John "Jay" Boisseau, Texas Advanced Computer Center/ University of Texas at Austin

The persistent increases in processor performance and interconnect scalability have pushed us into the Petascale Era. However, this drive for raw performance and scalability has introduced multiple "data dilemmas" - and we're all guilty of contributing, directly or indirectly. Computational performance is increasingly out of balance with data movement, management, and analysis capabilities, just as new generations of instruments are also overwhelming us with data. New approaches and design decisions are required to help us balance the investment, performance and throughput in order to deliver the highest level of impact from large-scale computing systems. The Texas Advanced Computer Center has reached the leading edge of supercomputing, and is now dealing with these data dilemmas (as a guilty contributor) in interesting and even novel ways that they hope will benefit other computational centers and organizations.
