Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Tools Development

High pressure compressors are one of the most critical components of a jet engine.  Decades of development and three to six development rigs are required before they have acceptable performance.  Validated high-fidelity simulation tools have the potential to reduce the development time and cost of new core compressors.  Avetec, the University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, and GE Global Research, will demonstrate the capability of using time-accurate Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) codes to realize that potential.

The front 3 stages of an advanced high pressure compressor have been simulated using two time-accurate RANS codes. They are being compared to experimental data.  One code was developed at The Ohio State University and Mississippi State University with support from NASA, DOD, and industry.  The other code is the primary turbomachinery code developed and used by GE - Aviation.
