Hardware in the Loop Testing
The design, development, and qualification of modern weapon systems are incredibly complex, time-intensive and expensive processes.  From an industry standpoint in the 1980s and 1990s there was a national level effort to improve efficiency in our manufacturing processes by focusing on optimizing the supply chain.  In current weapon systems development programs up to 80 percent of the design and development work is done by design suppliers working as independent entities in collaboration with the prime contractor.  It is up to the prime contractor to integrate designs across the design chain into the final full system design.  This not only distributes the risk, but also adds to the complexity of the systems engineering process. A new focus on this design chain is required.
