USA40 Net: High Speed Network
Connectivity for American Competitiveness

Avetec has established USA40Net, a high-speed private network, to provide dedicated infrastructure connected to major research networks in the United States (U.S.). USA40Net enables controlled, high-speed data transfer between key government research laboratories, select industrial organizations and educational institutions. The fiber network extends from the Avetec National Center for Advanced Modeling and Simulation in Springfield, Ohio to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and then on to Cincinnati. Through an agreement with Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL), the backbone is extended from Cincinnati to Indianapolis and then on to Chicago into the StarLight optical network facility which serves as a hub for most major high-speed research networks in the U.S. With a minimum backbone capacity of 10 Gigabits/s, Avetec will be able to offer high-speed, high-bandwidth, data intensive computing-related services and testing capability. Connectivity from Avetec into the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, DoD Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC) is the only connection of its kind and is positioned to connect researchers on base to national level computational assets.

Connectivity Points and Methods

Organizations wishing to connect to USA40Net can currently reach the backbone at the following connectivity points and methods:

Springfield, OH Router installed peering possible, Avetec facility
Wright-Patterson AFB, OH Router installed peering possible, DSRC facility
Cincinnati, OH Lighting equipment only (room for additional gear), Quest POP
Indianapolis, IN Lighting equipment only (room for additional gear), ORNL FutureNet
Chicago, IL Lighting equipment only, StarLight

We are continually expanding our reach through peering relationships. Peering relationships that currently exist through our point of presence at StarLight include:

  1. DOE Energy Sciences Net (ESNET)
  2. NASA Research and Engineering Network (NREN)
  3. Defense Research and Engineering Network (DREN)
  4. Southern Light Rail (Connectivity possible to Georgia Institute of Technology)
  5. NASA Integrated Services Network (NISN)

Last mile connections to USA40Net can be accomplished through one of the following ways with each having its own advantages and limitations:

  1. Acquire a leased service
  2. Acquire existing dark fiber
  3. Build fiber to one of the sites above.
