High school girls in the Dayton area were given the opportunity to participate in the third annual Wings of Women (WOW) conference sponsored by the National Aviation Hall of Fame on July 17, 2009. Through participation in this event, girls were introduced to exciting careers in aviation and encouraged to explore these options post graduation.

Former Avetec intern Connie Estep recently received the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Institute in Education (ORISE) scholarship to continue research at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB). The scholarship is awarded to individuals pursuing degrees and conducting research at national laboratories and federal research facilities nationwide.

On June 6, 2009, Avetec will host its first Geocaching in the Classroom teacher workshop.
Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting sport in which the participants use a Global
Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers anywhere in the world.

Nine Clark County students have been selected to participate in the prestigious Wright Scholar program for 2008 out of 65 total applicants. Each student will work in a paid position this summer at the Air Force Research Laboratory in the Propulsion Directorate at Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

On Wednesday, April 2, College and Career Day was hosted for the junior class at North High School in Springfield, Ohio. The event was organized by GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), a federally funded program focused on equipping middle and high school students with the necessary tools to enter and succeed in post-secondary education.

The Avetec Board of Directors appointed Homer Smith as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Springfield-based non-profit research and education organization on Feb. 6, 2008. Smith has been filling this role in an “acting” capacity since Sept. 24.

On November 8th, WDTN-2 & CW’s Jim Bucher made a surprise visit to Avetec to crown Education Director Cathy Balas as the “King of Springfield.” The special crowning is a part of Bucher’s series where he finds unique and interesting people, places, and things and crowns the “king of the town.”

This January, five Clark State Community College students and one Wilberforce University student will participate in a five-week internship at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington. PNNL is one of the U.S. Department of Energy's ten national laboratories and offers annual internships for college-level students.

North High School student Benjamin Yu was one of 24 students in Ohio and only 177 in the nation to receive a perfect score of 36 on the ACT.

Three Wilberforce University students completed the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program. These three students are the first-ever Wilberforce University students to be selected for the 10-week program geared toward minority students studying Fossil Energy mission-related disciplines.

Avetec and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) have again collaborated to offer the Wright Scholar Research Assistant Program to high school students and recent high school graduates who possess a keen interest in science and engineering. The summer program presented these students with the opportunity to work full-time at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

This summer, forty-two middle school students participated in ACES, Avetec's one-day-a-week summer program for students of Clark County. ACES stands for Avetec's Career Exploration in Science, and exploring careers is exactly what they did.

A group of 5th grade students came together for hands-on science and technology experiments at the STARBASE Reunion. STARBASE, a program at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base that runs through the school year, motivates 5th grade students to learn math, science and technology.
