Central State University W.E.B. Dubois Talented Tenth Teacher Training Academy – May Deadline

Central State University Institute of Urban Education sponsors a two week summer program for 14, 15, and 16 year old students who have an interest and desire in becoming a science, math, or technology teacher.   Students will not only learn the steps to becoming a teacher but will experience technology, math, and science concepts so that they can readily prepare a lesson plan to be written and delivered to a younger group of students. 

Full scholarships are available to cover all program costs for up to 15 students.  Students will be expected to participate in both weeks and complete several homework assignments.  There will be exposure to teachers and scientists throughout the program.  Lunch, field trips, and materials will be provided.

National Aviation Hall Of Fame – Wings of Women Conference

The National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio hosts a one-day conference (July) highlighting outstanding women who have achieved success and recognition in their respective aviation/aerospace fields.  These women share their passion, commitment and time with high school girls who are looking towards their future career and personal development. This conference is part of the National Aviation Hall of Fame’s commitment to inspiring the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, pilots, astronauts and dreamers.

SEMEDS – Scanning Electron Microscope EDucatorS

SEMEDS is a unique program that brings local students and their teachers to Wright Patterson Air Force Base to operate state-of-the art scanning electron microscopes in a real life laboratory setting.  This motivating educational outreach is conducted by volunteers from across WPAFB and is sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory materials and Manufacturing Directorate.
SEMEDS is a two hour after school program for high school and middle school students.  Each session can accommodate 12-18 students and up to 4 sessions are offered each month.  The session begins with a brief explanation of what SEM is, how it works, and the scientific concepts behind it.  Students are also briefed on typical careers and training needed into the microscopy field.  They are then escorted to one of the SEM labs for an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience first hand what it’s like to use a $500,000 microscope to 0065plorea wide variety of unique and everyday specimens.  Bringing students into a world-class facility, introducing them to the elite researchers who work there, and allowing them to use the same equipment they use, into their laboratories, is a very special experience that cannot be duplicated.

Summer Transportation Institute Program – May Deadline

The National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) is funded by the U. S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The NSTI provides career orientation and educational experiences to motivate high school students (10th, 11th graders) toward professions in the field of transportation. Participants spend four weeks at Central State University.

TECH Trek

TECH Trek is a mobile science laboratory that offers local students, educators and businesses a hands-on interactive experience with high-tech equipment and scientific concepts.  TECH Trek – a technology transfer initiative – is staffed and managed by the Wright Patterson Air Force Base Educational Outreach Office.  The Mobile Laboratory includes a $100,000 personal scanning electron microscope; INTEL play computer interfaced light microscopes, compound light microscopes, a dissecting microscope and auxiliary equipment.  All materials are on loan from the Air force Research laboratory.  The program focuses on all learners K-12 and is adaptable to a variety of learning styles and abilities.

Avetec ACES – Avetec Career Exploration in Sciences is designed to orient students to a variety of scientific career fields.  This is a summer program open to students entering grades 6-8 during the new academic school year.  There is no cost to attend.  The program runs seven Wednesdays throughout the summer.

Avetec's Flight Kit

Have our education flight crew come to your school to demonstrate the basics of flight with fun hands-on activities featuring paper aviation design.  Demonstrations and activities can be modified to support standards in math, science, language arts, social studies, visual arts and technology.  Teacher training related to concepts of the flight kit and how to incorporate them into the curricula is also available.

NASA Explorer Schools – Application Deadline January

This "pipeline" strategic initiative promotes and supports the incorporation of NASA content and programs into science, technology and mathematics curricula in classroom grades 4-9 across the United States. Targeting underserved populations in diverse geographic locations, NASA Explorer Schools will bring together educators, administrators, students and families in sustained involvement with NASA’S education programs.

Teams composed of full-time teachers and a school administrator develop and implement a three-year action plan to address local challenges in science, technology and mathematics education. This customized professional development plan will be available based on needs assessments and delivered through on-site school services and via distance-learning networks.

Robotics In The Classroom

Offered by the Wright Patterson Air force Base Educational Outreach Office, age appropriate curriculum units introduce students to robotics and build on that knowledge by allowing students to progress from theory to real robot design and programming.  WPAFB is a tournament partner with FIRST LEGO League (FLL) to help bring local and state competitions in Ohio.  The challenge is announced in September, student teams have eight weeks to design, build and program a robot to achieve as many objectives on the playing field as possible in a 2.5 minute round.  Teams must also make a Research Project Presentation about the science behind the challenge them and a Technical Presentation about their strategy for designing, building and programming their robot.

National Aviation Hall of Fame – Project SkyReach

The National Aviation Hall of Fame has developed 4th grade lesson plans focusing on the 6 character traits of Character Counts.  These traits include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.  The background of the curriculum is based on core ethical values rooted in a democratic society. National Aviation Hall of Fame Enshrines are utilized to demonstrate the attributes inventors and innovators need to develop successful products along with their life’s accomplishments.

STARBASE Elementary Learning Program

STARBASE, a Department of Defense program at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is an exciting educational activity for 5th grade students. The 5-day program (25 hours total) gives students a myriad of learning opportunities ranging from group problem-solving projects, to experimenting with water rockets, to seeing firsthand the countless careers that exist in science and technology in our area. Schools participate in the program free of cost and are only responsible for providing transportation to and from the base.
Required forms are to be completed before class is scheduled.
