Supercomputer Professionals Convene in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD (May 19, 2009) – More than 100 industry, university and government supercomputing professionals convened at Wittenberg University today to network and learn about high performance computing data management.
“High performance computing is not really about rooms filled with processors, it’s about managing massive amounts of data in a meaningful way,” said former congressman Dave Hobson during Avetec’s Data Intensive Computing Environment’s fourth annual DICE
Hobson said supercomputers are “not an end in themselves, but a means to an end” – a tool for scientific advancement in fields like climate change, molecular medicine and engine development.

The Data Intensive Computing Environment Program is Avetec’s high performance computing and networking research division. Avetec is a non-profit organization that has built a virtual testing environment to research solutions to complex problems like those in aerospace. Right now, Avetec’s research is focused on the gas turbine engine and improving high performance computing systems to help researchers in many scientific disciplines speed the time it takes to get innovative products to market.
