Clark State Mathematics Student As Avetec Intern
01/26/10
Clark State mathematics student Matt Hardacre had never heard of MATLAB or Octave before starting his internship at Avetec in December. Now he is helping the Avetec research team using transfer functions of Octave to study the volume of piston engines and also to work on vibration systems related to a mass-spring damping project.
Matt was awarded a 400 hour internship through the Future Jobs program. Future Jobs is a partnership of Clark State Community College, Wittenberg University, the University of Dayton, and Central State University and is committed to providing employer-driven programs that advance curricula that create sustainable, high paying technology driven jobs for Ohio.
Matt is a 2009 graduate of Clark Shawnee High School. When he graduated from high school he already had been attending Clark State for a year through the post secondary options program. He is the recipient of the Clark State Trustees Scholarship and he plans to transfer to Wright State in engineering after completing his Associate’s degree next year.
Professor Jerome Murray recommended Matt for the internship after recognizing the opportunity it would give Matt to apply the learning he is doing in class to real world challenges. Cathy Balas, Avetec’s Executive Director of Education agrees saying, “Giving students the chance to expand their classroom learning and gain new skills and information about careers open to them after graduation is one of Avetec’s cornerstones. We are pleased to see Matt learning new skills quickly and applying them to important research topics.”
Avetec’s thanks go to Andrea Frederick at Future Jobs and to Mary Patton and Jerome Murray at Clark State for arranging this internship.
