Clark State mathematics student Matt Hardacre had never heard of MATLAB or Octave before starting his internship at Avetec in December. Now he is helping the Avetec research team using transfer functions of Octave to study the volume of piston engines and also to work on vibration systems related to a mass-spring damping project.

Avetec enters 2010 with new contracts to support its public benefit research endeavors. Among these are new contracts with Avetec’s fellow National Aerospace Leadership Initiative (NALI) partner, the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT), with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), and a new grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

IDC’s Earl Joseph and Avetec's Al Stutz will unveil results of a new, comprehensive study of HPC data center power and cooling issues and practices at the DICE Alliance 2009 conference on May 20. A panel session will also be held, including Joseph and other industry experts, to further discuss power and cooling technology trends.
“This is a groundbreaking study,” said Joseph. “Power and cooling demands are in many cases restricting the growth of supercomputers and their storage systems. A study this comprehensive offers insights and has implications for the future ideas and solutions that will help guide HPC data centers and HPC vendors as they make plans for growing their supercomputing capacity and capability.”

Avetec congratulates Bill Pike, one of this year’s winner of the prestigious Department of Energy Fitzner/Eberhardt Award for Outstanding Contributions to Science and Engineering Education. Bill is a scientist with the Computational and Statistical Analytics Division at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratories (PNNL). His honor is for his work with students, including the Avetec sponsored Clark State Community College students who had internships at PNNL last year.

The Data Intensive Computing Environment will host the fourth annual DICE Alliance conference on high performance computing May 18-20, 2009 at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
The conference will bring together thought leaders in HPC data management from all sectors of research - government, industry and academia. The conference's best-yet lineup of speakers includes John "Jay" Boisseau, Ph.D., Texas Advanced Computing Center / The University of Texas at Austin; Earl Joseph II, IDC; David Padgham, U.S. Council on Competitiveness; Sharan Kalwani, General Motors; and Frank Witzeman, DoD Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC).

Local non-profit research organization Avetec has selected Sidney-based Ferguson Construction Co. to build its state-of-the-art headquarters building at the Nextedge Applied Research and Development Park in Springfield. The company started construction on the second building at the park today.

The Avetec Board of Directors appointed Homer Smith as acting Chief Executive Officer of the Springfield-based non-profit research and education organization effective Monday, Sept. 24.
