Avetec Announces Data Intensive Impact Awards for HPC Innovation

05/21/09

SPRINGFIELD (May 20, 2009) – At its fourth annual DICE Alliance Conference, Avetec’s HPC Research Division – the Data Intensive Computing Environment (DICE) – awarded the first-ever 2009 DICE Data Intensive Impact Product of the Year Awards to showcase products and technologies that have impacted HPC data management by applying the latest technologies and capabilities to enable progress in data locality, movement, manipulation and integrity.

In the Product Category, DICE selected BlueArc Titan Series 3000, which the DICE team considers to be the next generation of intelligent platforms for file services.

“The Titan 3000 series provides a new approach for file services with industry leading performance and is designed to meet the requirements of enterprise and HPC data centers,” said Al Stutz, Avetec Chief Information Officer. Stutz said the product supports high-performance applications with enhanced storage performance, scalability and reliability. The Titan 3000 series allows for the consolidation and management of up to 4 petabytes of data in a single namespace.

In the Future Technology Category, DICE selected Woven SystemsTM 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10G or 10GE) Switching.

“The DICE team considers Woven Systems’ 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10G or 10GE) Switching to be the leader in new innovative solutions to latency-riddled and bandwidth-inefficient interconnect solutions,” said Stutz. “The evolution of the multi-core processor architecture and high performance storage and memory solutions has made the need for higher network bandwidth, larger networks, and faster response time from data center networks more mission-critical.”

Woven Systems’ wirespeed low latency 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switching solutions meets these emerging needs by increasing overall cluster compute performance, lowering application response time, removing bottlenecks to high-speed storage, maximizing Intel Xeon 5500 server compute performance, lowering operating costs through leading price/performance solutions, and dynamically load-balancing HPC network traffic to maximize network bandwidth and latency and eliminate the need for tuning network design.

About the Winners
BlueArc is a leading provider of high performance unified network storage systems to enterprise markets, as well as data intensive markets, such as electronic discovery, entertainment, federal government, higher education, Internet services, oil and gas and life sciences. Their products support both network attached storage and storage area network services on a converged network storage platform. BlueArc enables companies to expand the ways they explore, discover, research, create, process and innovate in data-intensive environments.

Woven Systems is an innovative networking systems vendor that provides standards-based wirespeed 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switching solutions that fit today’s IT budgets. Woven's patented vSCALE™ packet processing technology featuring Dynamic Congestion Avoidance enables customers to implement wirespeed, low latency, and load balanced 10 Gigabit Ethernet data center networks.

Woven’s cluster network interconnect solution in the ATLAS compute cluster at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Hannover, Germany achieved high ranking among Gigabit Ethernet clusters in the most TOP500 list of supercomputer sites. The ATLAS cluster successfully leverages Woven’s Dynamic Congestion Avoidance feature in Woven’s 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switching solutions to reach a performance level of 32.8 Teraflops.”

About the Award
The DICE Data Intensive Impact Product of the Year Awards program was designed to showcase products and technologies that have impacted HPC data management by applying the latest technologies and capabilities to enable progress in data locality, movement, manipulation and integrity. The solutions considered may be either hardware, software or a combination. The product or technology can address more than one of the DICE Challenge Focus Areas - Data Locality, Movement, Manipulation or Integrity - but will only be considered for one award. Up to four awards will be selected and presented each year at the DICE Alliance conference.

About the Sponsor
Avetec is a not-for-profit research company focused on research through modeling, simulation and testing to advance American companies’ competiveness. Avetec has three major areas of research 1) turbo machinery, 2) Data Intensive Computing Environment (DICE) and 3) Workforce development.
Avetec’s HPC Research Division – the Data Intensive Computing Environment is a geographically dispersed test environment that conducts technology testing and validation for new and emerging HPC data management solutions. The DICE team works with the HPC industry, data centers (government and industry), and the research community to evaluate new and emerging products and technology that enhance research computing data and results throughput.
