Junior Class College and Career Day

North High School Replicates Educational Event for the Junior Class

04/07/08

On Wednesday, April 2, College and Career Day was hosted for the junior class at North High School in Springfield, Ohio.  The event was organized by GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), a federally funded program focused on equipping middle and high school students with the necessary tools to enter and succeed in post-secondary education.

The event, which was a successor to a similar event held for senior students, was filled with a series of college- and career-related workshops to address the needs of the junior students who plan to go to college.

The event’s numerous workshop sessions, taught by local professionals and college representatives, covered valuable educational skills like how to write a college application essay, how to pay for college, and included discussions about careers like nursing and accounting.

“I was really excited to be a part of this workshop,” said workshop leader and Avetec’s Communication Specialist Sarah Ammar.  “We’ve got a lot of really bright students in this community, and being able to help them through the college application process is an honor. I had a lot of fun and welcome the opportunity to do it again!”

At the end of the day, the students had the opportunity to visit with representatives from area colleges and universities represented and get more information about their programs.

“[Through these events] I would hope to establish a working relationship between GEAR UP, Springfield High, and local colleges and universities to provide college and career programming to students in grades nine through twelve on a yearly basis,” says Sheila Ross, Avetec Special Projects Manager and the event’s coordinator.

Her message to the students is a simple truth: “All students with a high school diploma can go to college.”
