Three Wilberforce University students completed the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program. These three students are the first-ever Wilberforce University students to be selected for the 10-week program geared toward minority students studying Fossil Energy mission-related disciplines. These students, along with other selected students across the country, had the opportunity to apply the theories they learned in their classrooms to the real-world problems they encountered on the job.
Each student spent the duration of the program at one of the DOE’s partnering field sites. Under the guidance of personal mentors, the students worked on a Fossil Energy research and development-related project or on a project of the industry partner’s choice.
At the close of the program, the students gathered together to participate in a technology forum and gave formal presentations about their summer projects. The DOE officials, their mentors, parents, fellow students and guests were all in attendance at the forum.
“I received positive feedback from their mentors and the program officials,” said Avetec Education Consultant Kenneth Briggs. Briggs, who works onsite at Wilberforce and helped coordinate the students’ applications added, “Wilberforce is full of bright, young men and women, and it’s nice to see them actively participating in such academically rigorous programs.”
