Work Continues on Springfield's High Tech Infrastructure

Fiber Optic Ring Will Make Springfield More Attractive to Business

01/02/08

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (January 2, 2008) – Progress continues toward completing Springfield’s new high tech infrastructure with the installation of a fiber optics network in and around the city.

“The fiber infrastructure will help our city attract new businesses that require the latest technology and connectivity,” said Jon Skelley, Avetec IT Director. “In today’s global economy, having fiber is akin to having good roads – it is essential for many high-tech companies to operate.”

To date, installation has taken place between Nextedge Applied Research and Technology Park and Bird Rd on U.S. Route 40 and will eventually connect to downtown Springfield. Work is currently in progress for the point of presence, or “PoP,” where the fiber ring will connect to national resources. The second phase of connectivity (on the southern part of the ring) has started, with the fiber mainly being installed on power poles through a partnership with FirstEnergy.

“Overall construction is about one-third complete, and the contractors estimate it will be finished this Spring,” said Skelley. “Avetec should have its research network online by the time construction is complete.”

The project is funded by Avetec through a U.S. Department of Energy grant and supported by a partnership with the City of Springfield, Turn Key, the Turner Foundation, and local schools and universities.

The fiber optic infrastructure is an essential tool for Avetec to conduct collaborative research and product development in its modeling and simulation center at the Nextedge Park,” said Avetec’s Interim Chief Executive Officer Homer Smith.

Avetec’s new headquarters building at Nextedge is slated to open in October 2008.
