Challenge

Data locality. This project examined the significance of a RAM-based storage system used for alleviating storage related bottlenecks within the HPC environment.

Objective

ViON installed their HyperStor storage solution and evaluated the advantages of using RAM-based storage when trying to provide a higher performance file system. ViON evaluated throughput performance for both data and metadata as defined by various file system
and metadata benchmarks.

Results

ViON’s HyperStor storage server was added to the baseline at the NASA Goddard Data Intensive Computing Environment (DICE) site. Evaluations were conducted for augmenting file systems and separating data and metadata. The study indicated considerable cost benefits could be achieved.

Ultimate Value

A HyperStor InfiniBand connected storage device allows for enhanced flexibility within an existing cluster environment to augment file systems, separate data and metadata, and create additional swap-based memory space. As systems architectures change, RAM-based storage will continue to be effective, requiring only plugging into any new system to continue use.
